Supporting the Data Lifecycle Symposium

A one day ANDS-ARCS symposium defining and aligning institutional, national and international approaches to storing and managing research data

Wednesday, February 11 in the Holme Building, University of Sydney

Hosted by University of Sydney ICT; sponsored by ANDS, ARCS and Intersect

Program  Presentations   Workshop Summary

The lifecycle of research data and the typical workflows of research create the need for many different types of research data management environments.  According to the point in that lifecycle, the data management environment is characterised by varying levels of robustness, openness, integrity, flexibility, persistence and formal contextual documentation.

For example a single data set may "evolve" from an informal scratch space on a desktop to a public reference dataset over a period of time.

This symposium will focus on the stage where a data set first moves into a stable managed environment and from there into the preliminary phases of publication or formal collaboration.

What are the key features of these environments?  Are there any natural cluster points along this spectrum?  What are the fundamental requirements?  What infrastructure models might support these?  How do institutional, national, and global interests coalesce?  Who is responsible for retention and disposal policies, what should these be, and what are the resource implications of these decisions?

The symposium will investigate these questions with a view to informing and forming policy and technical directions at the institutional, regional and national levels.

Participation

Attendance will be by invitation.  Representatives will include researchers, those who are responsible for eResearch support and provision, and research managers.  Anyone else wishing to attend should apply via email to margaret.henty@anu.edu.au
