Group

Meaning and purpose

Group is the organisation that is contributing this metadata record (this registryObject), that is, the metadata publisher.

As used in Research Data Australia,  group is a category based on organisation name. It is used to bring together metadata records displayed in Research Data Australia with other records from the same institution. The concept of Group is a way of bringing together Registry Objects contributed by different Data Sources for discovery purposes.

Use in Research Data Australia

Group names are used on the home page of Research Data Australia to group pages.

RIF-CS best practice guidelines

Use the full name of the organisation; for example, Australian National University. Do not use acronyms. Do not use URIs or domains for example, not ANU, not anu.edu.au

Assignment to a Group does not replace the need to create links to related parties.

Assigning groups

  • A group name is generally a top level organisation, such as a university.

  • Assign group name based on institutional affiliation.

  • Group should be described using a plain text string set to the name of the contributing organisation; for example, Australian National University.

  • For multi-institutional collections, parties and projects, assign a group name based on one of the institutions contributing the collections. Do not create duplicate registry objects for the same data collection.

Groups and data sources

  • Group and data source are not the same thing.

  • A data source is a harvest location for ANDS Collections Registry metadata, while a group is an assigned display and search category for Research Data Australia web pages.

  • A data source doesn't 'belong' to a group. One data source may contribute metadata which belongs in differing groups. Ownership or custodian responsibility is not necessarily implied.

Groups

Disambiguation: group and Party of type "group"

Group should not be confused with the Party Type of "group". Although they may have names and values in common, these concepts have different purposes in the ANDS Collections Registry.
