The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released new guidance for researchers and organisations wanting to share and access publicly funded health and health-related data.
It recommends that the use of publicly funded datasets for research should be "promoted, encouraged and maximised for public benefit, whilst also protecting privacy and confidentiality".
Principles for accessing and using publicly funded data for health research has been developed by the NHMRC to represent a common view about sharing the data, and the roles and responsibilities of all parties.
The guidance also includes a Consumer Guide to the Principles, which may be useful to researchers dealing with members of the public.
