How fantastic! A 10 year roadmap for Australia’s research infrastructure.
As the draft roadmap notes, great research needs great infrastructure, and it also needs reliability.
This roadmap shows how the important domains will be systematically covered by a set of strategic infrastructure investments. Underlying so many of them is data.
The draft roadmap envisages an Australian Research Data Cloud – a counterpart of the European Open Science Cloud. It needs a strong technical base to enable data to be used effectively, whether it is large or small, complex or straightforward, sensitive or open.
It also needs the elements that we know to be important: good policy, a strong skills base and a wide range of partnerships, including industry and international.
ANDS, Nectar and RDS are already working hard towards the Australian Research Data Cloud. The Roadmap broadly notes the influence of data, so this requires broad coordination. Fortunately, the work previously done by Rhys Francis, Tom Cochrane and others provides a strong basis for this coordination. We really can look forward to the next 10 years of NCRIS providing a wonderful platform for data.
As Cathrine Harboe-Ree, University Librarian at Monash University and ANDS board member, observed:
“At a time when solutions to the world’s greatest challenges require global, multi-disciplinary collaboration, the Australian Research Data Cloud will deliver an integrated, coherent and reliable base to accelerate the transition to a data-intensive research environment and ensure that data is exploited to its full potential.”
“It will provide a world-leading data advantage for Australia, foster innovation and collaboration for borderless research and enhance the translation of research.”
